Finding the information you need
A Mentor search still leaves an important question: which firm works on this kind of incident? Use the firm profiles as a starting point, then confirm practice focus, service area, and license status directly.
Mentor appears in the live firm-location data even though it is outside the ranked population set used on this page.
List who was present, who controlled the location or vehicle, and which organization created a report. In Mentor, first note where the injury happened, who was present, and who made a report. For a traffic collision, save the report number, vehicle and insurer details, trip records if a hired ride was involved, and original photos. For a fall in a store, restaurant, hotel, or parking area, record the precise spot, condition you observed, witnesses, and any report to staff. The fact that an injury happened at a place does not by itself establish legal responsibility.
Schools, parks, sidewalks, and public buildings call for an additional question: who owned or controlled the exact location? A Mentor or Ohio agency, school district, private operator, property owner, or contractor may have different duties and procedures. If an animal was involved, preserve the owner’s identity, medical records, witness details, and any animal-control contact. These facts help a lawyer identify what to investigate.
Before you call, separate what you saw from what someone else told you. Make a short timeline of medical care, missed work, and insurer contact, then save the original messages and documents. Ask the firm which records it would obtain itself and whether any camera footage, vehicle data, or school records should be preserved quickly. You do not need to decide who was at fault before speaking with a lawyer; a focused account of the known facts is more useful than a conclusion.

Photograph the exact feature if safe, identify the address or facility area, record weather and lighting, find witnesses, and note the agency or contractor that received a report. Public ownership does not itself establish liability and may trigger special procedures.
The first investigation should also test who controlled the site, vehicle, animal, equipment, or activity and which records exist in Mentor. Preserve what you have without editing originals. If a Ohio public body or public school may be involved, ask about immunity and claim-notice procedures immediately.
Ohio Rev. Code § 2305.10 provides two years for the category summarized here. Accrual rules, tolling, minors, medical claims, wrongful death, claims against public bodies, and other exceptions can change the calculation. Treat the citation as a prompt for a lawyer, not a filing calendar.
Ohio generally applies this fault principle: modified comparative negligence generally bars recovery when claimant negligence is greater than the combined negligence of other persons from whom recovery is sought. The result depends on the causes of action, responsible parties, proof, and current law. Dog bites can be governed by statutes, common law, local ordinances, or more than one theory. A public school, city, county, transit agency, or state body can introduce immunity, claim-presentation, or notice requirements. Ask counsel to identify the exact entity and current procedure promptly.

Ask each firm whether it currently handles the relevant type of case in Ohio. For a collision, ask how it investigates disputed fault and preserves vehicle or trip records. For a dog bite, ask which elements and defenses the applicable dog-injury rule requires. For a public place or school, ask about experience identifying the right public entity and checking notice requirements. A firm that handles one injury category may not handle all of them.
Also ask which lawyer will supervise the work, who will contact you, how often you can expect updates, and what happens if the firm declines the case. Request written terms covering the fee, expenses, any termination provision, and what you might owe if there is no recovery. A directory profile is not an endorsement or a promise that a firm will take your case.
Our mission is to make public information about personal injury law firms easier to find, understand, and verify. We organize factual directory records, practical legal education, and links to official sources so people can begin their research with greater clarity.
Our philosophy is accuracy before promotion, clarity before complexity, and corrections whenever reliable evidence shows that a listing has changed. Directory inclusion is informational and is never presented as a legal recommendation.
A dated summary, the exact location, names of people involved, report numbers, photos, treatment information, and insurance contacts are useful. Tell the firm which items you do not yet have; do not delay a time-sensitive call to assemble a perfect file.
A lawyer should be licensed for the relevant jurisdiction and able to handle the case's local facts. An office address alone does not establish fit. Ask who will investigate the crash and whether an in-person meeting is necessary.
The applicable rule varies by state; some bite statutes do not require proof of prior behavior. Preserve the owner’s details, witnesses, location, treatment, and any animal-control record so a lawyer can assess the available theories.
The answer depends on ownership, maintenance, the precise condition, and the type of claim. A public body may have immunity or special notice rules. Give a lawyer the exact location and ask them to identify the correct entity promptly.
No. The setting, activity, supervision, and governing law all matter. Keep the school’s report and communications, identify witnesses, and ask counsel whether public-district procedures, a private party, or another route is relevant.
Yes. A firm based elsewhere may serve Mentor, but confirm its current service area, lawyer licensing, and whether it can investigate locally. A nearby office is convenient, but the right experience and communication plan matter too.
Ask for the written fee agreement and a worked example showing how attorney fees, case expenses, and other obligations would be handled. Ask what you might owe if there is no recovery. Compare the full terms, not only a percentage.
Injury evidence checklist helps you preserve original files, reports, and a dated account without guessing at missing details.
Consultation decision sheet gives you the same questions to ask each firm, including who handles the case and how you will receive updates.
Understanding contingency fees identifies the fee and expense terms to clarify before signing an agreement.
